Lot Essay

The subject matter of the oeuvre of Van Reymerswaele and his studio consists of a limited number of iconographical themes. Amongst these, four distinct compositions of Saint Jerome are known; the present picture derives, with numerous minor differences, from the earliest dated version (1521; Prado, Madrid, a dating that has been open to some debate) and shows strong affinities with Dürer's Saint Jerome (Museo de Arte Antiga, Lisbon) painted on his visit to Antwerp in 1521. The illumination on the Bible is after a painting by Rogier van der Weyden.
