A late work by the artist, this picture is typical of Van der Haagen's mature output from the 1660s. Much of his work from this period tends to be imbued with a heavy, darkened tonality with prominence given to the delicate execution of trees reminiscent of the forest landscapes of Jacob Isaacsz. van Ruisdael and his circle.
Van der Haagen seldom painted his own figures and Ludolf de Jongh, with whom he collaborated on a number of occasions, may be responsible for the staffage in the present picture.
