Lot Essay

The artist gained his soubriquet from his studies in Lille under Louis Watteau, by whom much of his work was strongly influenced, and whose daughter he subsequently married. Primarily a specialist in still life painting, other landscapes known by him include a River landscape with figures before a castle sold, Galerie Charpentier, Paris, 21 June 1960, and a River landscape with figures conversing in the foreground sold, Drouot, Paris, 13 November 1970.
