Lot Essay

Admiral Sir Richard Hussey Bickerton (1759-1832), the son of Vice-Admiral Sir Richard Bickerton (1727-92), entered the Navy in 1771, being made Lieutenant in 1777. Served in the Channel 1779-80 and then the West Indies in 1781, the year he was promoted Captain. He was again serving in the Channel when the French Wars began in 1793 and he was made Rear-Admiral in 1799, thereafter serving at Cadiz and off the Egyptian coast. Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean, and then second-in-command to Nelson, 1804-05. Made Admiral in 1810, he was Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth in 1812 and was created K.C.B. in 1815. His last appointment was as a General of Marines in 1830 prior to his death two years later.
