Lot Essay

Commander Frederick Walter entered the Royal Navy as a Cadet in December 1853 and first saw active service in the Baltic operations of 1855-56 as a Midshipman in H.M.S. Imperieuse. Subsequently engaged in the China War of 1856-60, in H.M.S. Tribune, Walter was advanced to Lieutenant in February 1863. But perhaps his finest hour was the 'heroic conduct' he displayed on the occasion of the fire aboard the Training Ship Goliath, off Grays on 22nd December 1875, when he managed to save some thirty lives and win the Silver Medal of the Royal Society for the Protection of Life from Fire. He was placed on the Retired List as a Commander in late 1873.
