Lot Essay

Charles Bravington (1910-2000) developed an interest in the work of Sir William Nicholson while studying architecture with Kit Nicholson at Trinity College, Cambridge. Bravington went onto acquire many of Nicholson's pictures direct from galleries and the sale rooms throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

Mr Cawley was the gardener at the artist's home in Sutton Veny, Wiltshire. The present work may have been intended for him, or given to him, when the house was sold the following year.

We are grateful to Patricia Reed for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
