Details
1928 AUSTIN SEVEN 'CHUMMY' TOURER
Registration No. SV 7267
Chassis No. 70198
Engine. M118518
Red with black wings and black interior.
Engine: four cylinder, side valve, 747cc, 11 bhp; Gearbox: three-speed sliding mesh; Suspension: transverse semi-elliptic front, quarter elliptic, live axle rear; Brakes: four-wheel non-interlinked mechanical. Right hand drive
From its introduction in 1922 the Austin Seven carried lightweight open tourer bodywork that earned the name Chummy owing to its small proportions which meant its passengers had to be fairly friendly to travel anywhere! As production developed many different forms of bodywork were offered, but the Chummy remained popular, albeit that the confines of this model expanded, as a result of which later Chummies are distinguishable by their upright windscreens, flat sided scuttle, and deeper hood arrangement. By the year of production of this example the Seven was in its heyday, but continued to sell extremely well, into the mid-1930's.
Originally registered on 30th October 1928, no pre-war history is known, however a buff continuation log book with the car details immediate post-war ownership when it appears that the Austin resided in the Cambridge area, changing hands a number of times, possibly being used as student transport.
In the present ownership this charming 'Chummy' has been thoroughly worked through, to perfect a previous restoration. During this time, the bodywork has been repainted to the present livery. The wheels have been re-spoked and shod with new tyres, new brake linings have been fitted and the prop-shaft rebuilt. Unusually all fittings are in working order, including the suction operated Lucas windscreen wiper.
At some stage the original engine has been exchanged for a later vintage unit, but this now benefits from a Superaloy cylinder head, aspirated by an SU carburettor, which is reported to give the Seven lively performance.
With the exacting detail and eye for precision of its fastidious owner, the car is today in excellent, practical and most usable order. It is also equipped with a full hood in double duck, and all sidescreens.
A road fund licence, and MoT are supplied together with a reproduction handbook, and the vendor informs us that the car will naturally be driven to the sale.
