Further details
One of the earliest documentaries, this montage of 1920s Moscow life uses all the cinematic techniques available at that time: split screen, freeze frame, dissolves and slow motion. It has been inspirational to many modern film-makers, including Jean-Luc Godard, who named his production company after the director of the film, Dziga Vertov.
The Steinberg Brothers, who created the artwork for this poster, are two of the most recognized artists of the Russian avant-garde. They were at the forefront of the Constructionist movement and were widely involved with architecture, sculpture and theatrical design. Their flair for graphic design led them to advertising work with the new Soviet cinema which was flourishing at the time.
This poster echoes the multiple exposures seen in the film by using the shadows of cameramen in the background and it also reflects the combination of human and machine parts. The eye in the camera belongs simultaneously to the cameraman as well as to the woman pictured, thus creating an endless visual play.
