GONDOIN, Jacques. Description des Ecoles de Chirurgie. Paris: Ph.-D. Pierres [for] Cellot et les frères Jombert, 1780.
2° (631 x 460mm). Etched frontispiece by Gibelin, 2 engraved plans, partially hand-coloured, and 28 engraved plates, most by C.R.G, Poulleay, one double-page plate of a frieze by P.L. Carizeau, one plate folding. (Waterstains at left and right hand corners of upper margin encroaching onto some plates, plate 4 slightly browned at margins, plate 14 with two repairs at lower blank margin, plates 15-17 with worm trace at inner margin.) Contemporary half calf and blue boards (upper cover detached, lower joinst weak, leather worn, spine titled in manuscript at later date). Provenance: unidentified ownership stamp on frontispiece.
A RARE WORK WHICH RECORDS GONDOIN'S NEO-CLASSICAL MASTERPIECE, the Ecole de Médecine, built near the Palais de Luxembourg, Paris. Louis XVI laid the foundation stone in 1769 and the building was completed in 1775. The anatomy theatre subsequently became the prototype for various legislative buildings, including Latrobe's House of Representatives in Washington. Brunet II, 1663, noting the work's unsubstantiated limitation of 100 copies.
