Lot Essay

According to an inscription on the frame, this was painted at Scawby. The picture was thus presumably painted for Sir John Nelthorpe, 8th Bt. The family had a notable tradition of commissioning sporting pictures. Sir John's father was the earliest of Stubbs's identifiable patrons and he himself employed Stubbs in the 1770s. This picture is of circa 1780 and the pinkish sky recalls that of a number of works by Stubbs.
