Lot Essay
The present sketch relates to the posthumous portrait of King George V on his Pony Jock at Sandringham (Ipswich Borough Council Museums and Galleries) which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1937. Munnings made a number of studies for the portrait, as illustrated by his painting Artist Painting King George V's Pony Jock (1936; sold in these Rooms, 5 June 1998, lot 172 for £309,500). French, who had been the King's groom, posed in a shooting suit which had belonged to his late master (see A.J. Munnings, The Second Burst, Bungay, 1951, p. 232).
