Lot Essay

The present work shows Nina and Cecil Warmoll, the twin children of Munnings's aunt Rosa, fishing over a low stone wall. The children were frequent visitors to Mendham and were depicted in Munnings's important oil painting, Stranded (1898; Bristol Museums and Art Gallery), which in 1899 was the first work by the artist to be accepted by the Royal Academy. Munnings re-employed his models for An Old Favourite (1899; sold Christie's New York, 1 December 1999, lot 140 for £1,872,675) his Royal Academy exhibit of the following year.
