Lot Essay

This rare volume was produced by Henry Stevens as a compliment to the Schöner globe that he owned, and with the help of an exhaustive introduction by C.H. Coote of the British museum, and reproductions and translations of various relevent sixteenth century texts, he produced an extremely fine work on the globe-maker and the history of the globe itself, right up until when it passed out of his hands. The introduction is particularly interesting, outlining, amongst other things, how Stevens reported seeing R,M, Hunt's child rolling the Hunt-Lennox sphere across the living room floor, and detailing a history of the Schöner globes and other contemporaneous spheres. It has not been possible to establish how many copies were produced, but it was clearly a very limited edition, probably only sold to libraries, institutions and a few interested private buyers.
