Lot Essay

Following a period training at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in 1908, Diederich began a ten year period of restless travel across Europe and through parts of Africa. Given his instinct for adventure, the open frontiers and wilderness of the Dark Continent was enormously appealing to Diederich. Hunting scenes were always an important theme in his art, with safari motifs and aspects of African wildlife appearing in many other areas of his work.
