ARIOSTO, Ludovico (1474-1533). Roland Furieux, poëme héroïque ... traduction nouvelle par M. d'Ussieux, Paris: Brunet, 1775-83.

4 volumes, 4° (252 x 194mm.), frontispiece portrait of the author by Fiquet after Eisen, half title in volume IV, 92 engraved plates comprising 46 by De Launay, Lingée and Ponce after Cochin and 46 from the Baskerville edition of 1773 by Bartolozzi, de Longueil, de Ghendt and others after Cipriani, Cochin, Eisen, Moreau, Monnet and Griuze (some light even browning and occasional spotting), contemporary red morocco gilt, arms of [?Chrétien-Guillaume] de Lamoignon on sides, gilt edges (spines of vol. III & IV chipped, extremities lightly rubbed).

"This ambitious book was abundantly illustrated by Cochin. Copies are often found, like this one, to which a set of the plates from the Baskerville Ariosto has been added in matching frames, with elegant new designs by Moreau replacing two of Eisen's feeblest efforts" (Ray). The arms on this copy may indicate the ownership of either Chrétien-Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes (1721-1794) or his son Chrétien-François de Lamoignon (1735-1789). It seems improbable that the arms are those of the 'Comtesse le Pelletier' (i.e. Marguerite de Lamoignon), as a bookseller's note claims, since after her marriage in 1769 Marguerite's arms appeared with those of her husband, Louis de Peletier (cf. Olivier 896, fer 1). Brunet I, 442; Cohen-de-Ricci 97-98; Ray French 10 & 64. (4)
