Lot Essay

A Lorette was described by Honoré Balzac as 'a decent name invented to express the state of a girl difficult to describe. The French Academy in its prudery and knowing the age of its members neglected to define that word.'. A Lorette was in fact a demi-mondaine living in the rather unexpensive area behind the church of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette in Paris. Another drawing of Lorettes by Guys is illustrated in P. Duflos 'Constantin Guys, fou de dessin; grand reporter 1802-1892, Paris, 1988, p. 27
