After finishing the School for Decorative and Applied Arts, he assisted the leading graphic designers of his time, Paul Schuitema and Piet Zwart, from 1931-1937. In the following years Elffers developed into an independant graphic designer and artist. After his studio was bombed in 1940, destroying all his pre-war work, the artist moved to Amsterdam, where he married the photographer Emmy Andriesse. In the decades to follow Elffers is one of the most important Dutch designers, best known for the yearly poster for the Holland Festival (from 1954-1967), and with commissions for Metz & Co. and the Stedelijk Museum. Around 1967 the artist changed his work radically from figurative expressionism to a more abstract style. Elffers was able to show his artistry in his assignments, knowing that in this situation his artistic skills could not fully bloom. An as the artist stated: ' Ik mis tijdens het schilderen de opdracht en als ik een opdracht had, kon ik het beste schilderen; de vrije kunst is een laboratorium voor de toegepaste'. The following lots show several fine results from the artist's laboratory.
