Lot Essay

Born in Kyoto, Ikuta lives in Wendell, North Carolina and his work is decorated with the insects, flowers and plants native to the state. The rich profusion of life in the climate of the South is amply illustrated on these stacking dishes as a praying mantis, butterfly, spider, and flowering trumpet vines interlock in a complex design.
His work is included in numerous museum collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
