Pinchas Litvinovsky was born in the Ukraine in 1894. He studied art in Russia and immigrated to Eretz Israel in 1919 on board the Russlan. Litvinovsky settled in Jerusalem and began exhibiting with the Hebrew Artist's Association in 1924. His works of the period relate to Russian Constructivism and Cubism. With these stylistic tools he related to his new life and experience in Israel.
The drawing medium was central to Litvinovsky's early Jerusalem period. In a commentary about Litvinovsky's works, among them drawings similar to the Eastern Fantasy exhibited at the Tower of David exhibition of 1925, art critic Simcha Eisen relates: "Litvinovsky belongs to the Modern School, the outward truth evident is secondary in his eyes. He pursues the inner movement, the expression of the relative impressions between one line and the next, between one angle and the next, between light and shade. One could almost say that his pictures are symbolical, symbols of ideas remote from every day reality". (Litvinovsky, Jerusalem, 1998, p. XI)
