A GREEK POTTERY RELIEF PITHOS
Crete, Archaic Period, Circa Early 7th Century B.C.
The large vessel with an ovoid body and flat rim, ornamented with two mold-made long-legged winged sphinxes applied to the cylindrical neck, their heads turned frontal, their hair arranged in Daedalic fashion, their heads supporting capitals, a long voluted tendril falling below, six stamped rosettes in the field, a band of bosses on the shoulders, the lower registers framed with double moldings, including a band of five mold-made applied reclining sphinxes (some now incomplete), their heads turned frontal, another band of bosses and a band with an undulating line below, on a tall cylindrical foot, the twin handles framed on the obverse with rotellae, a projecting flange on the underside of the rim for securing the now-missing lid
