The present view is thought to be of the Lake District. Lamorna Birch travelled widely, usually combining his favourite hobby of fishing with the pursuit of new locations for painting. The artist's honeymoon had been taken in the Lakes and he often re-visited the area, spending whole days by the chosen view working feverishly and smoking incessantly. Austin Wormleighton comments on a trip to the Lake District in July 1914 that, 'As the heat of the day bore down, Birch shed some of his heavy clothing and wrote that he was later to be seen "coat off and braces dangling loose"' (see A. Wormleighton, A Painter Laureate Lamorna Birch and his circle, Bristol, 1995, p. 128).
