Signed Nikkosai, Edo Period (Early-Mid 19th Century)
Lenticular with integral himotoshi; the cover and top three cases with gold lacquer ground, the lowest case with black lacquer ground sprinkled with varying grades of gold powder; decoration in gold, aokin and silver hiramaki-e with encrustation of gold; compartments and risers gold nashiji, shoulders and rims gold fundame; signed with gold hiramaki-e characters on the base Nikkosai; metal ojime with gilt filigree designs
Each side with a design of a butterfly and autumn plants including kikyo [Chinese bellflower], nadeshiko [pinks], ominaeshi [valerian] and susuki [pampas grass]
