NELSON VISITS HEREFORD, 1802

As soon as his Lordships carriage approached the town, the populace took the horses from it and drew it to the Hotel where he was received by the Duke of Norfolk who is the Recorder of Hereford; Then to the Town Hall with the Herefordshire Militia playing "See The Conquering Hero Comes!" Receives the Freedom of the City and the Address His Answer was expressed in terms of great modesty. He acknowledged he had been a fortunate Commander but what merit he might appear to be entitled to, was much more due to the brave Officers and Seamen which the Government had placed under his Command.
