ATKYNS, Sir Robert (1647-1711). The Ancient and Present State of Glostershire. London: W. Bowyer for Robert Gosling, 1712.

Engraved portrait of Atkyns by M. vander Gucht, title with woodcut printer's device, 8 engraved plates of coats-of- arms, double-page engraved map of Gloucestershire, 64 double-page engraved bird's-eye views drawn and engraved by Johannes Kip, woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials. (Some light spotting mainly affecting text leaves, light browning to a few plates, lower edge of 6 armorial plates trimmed to platemark.) Early 19th-century brown morocco gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (spine faded, lower corners slightly bumped). Provenance: early 19th century bookseller's note and price (£12.12.) in pencil on front endpaper.
A RARE FIRST EDITION of Atkyns's work containing a fine series of topographical views by Joannes Kip (1653-1722) of seats in the county of Gloucestershire. Topographer and son of the Chief Baron of the Exchequer, Atkyns was elected MP for the borough of Gloucester in 1684. Many copies of this work were destroyed in a fire at the printer's house in White Friars on January 30, 1712. The bookseller's inscription notes, 'Most of the copies of this edition are stained or partly burnt, occasioned by a fire in the printer's warehouse - the present is remarkably fine', and cites other copies from two fine English libraries, 'Sir Mk Sykes' copy sold £16. Nassau's 15/15/00.' The library of Sir Mark Sykes (1771-1823) was sold on 11 & 28 May and 21 June, 1824, and that of George Nassau (1756-1823) on 26 February, 8 March and 10 April 1814.
