DUGDALE, William (1605-1686) and Roger DODSWORTH (1585-1654). Monasticon Anglicanum: A History of the Abbies and other Monasteries, Hospitals, Frieres, and Cathedral and Collegiate Churches ... in England and Wales ...., continued by John Caley, Henry Ellis and Bulkeley Bandinel. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown [and others], 1817-1830.
6 volumes in 8, 2° (470 x 310mm). Engraved frontispiece in each bound volume by F. Finden after Hollar, titles in red and black, 242 (of 243?) engraved proof plates, including many double-page views by and after John Coney, and costume plates and views after Hollar by F. Finden amd J. Lee, a few illustrations in text. (Some spotting and browning of plates, and uniform light browning of text, waterstaining in vol. I.) Contemporary blue morocco gilt over wooden boards, covers with roll-tool and multiple fillet borders, fleurons at inner corners, spines with panels of flowers and scrolling foliage, gilt palmette inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (upper cover of vol. I a little scuffed).
ONE OF 50 LARGE-PAPER COPIES WITH PROOF PLATES, IN A FINE BINDING. First published in 3 folio volumes, 1655-1673, the present edition, issued in 50 parts, 'contains every thing in the original and in Stevens' continuation, with an English account of each monastery, and additions from the Chapter House, Westminster and public libraries' (Lowndes). This copy lacks one of the two plates of St. Cross Hospital (vol. VI, pt. ii) called for in the plate list. Although the plate of the Benedictine nun called for in volume II is not present, this appears to be a duplication, for the same plate is listed in volume I. Lowndes I, p. 685. (8)
