London: printed by the author, 1673. 2° (407 x 251mm). Engraved frontispiece after W. Hollar, 18 engraved plates and one double-page map. Engraved views on many pages. (Lacking the plate list, occasional browning or staining.) Second edition in English of Nieuhoff's account of the embassy of Peter de Goyer and Jacob de Keyser from the Dutch East India Company to the Emperor of China in 1655. Engraved frontispiece, folding engraved map of North and South America by F. Lamb after Ogilby, 6 engraved portraits, and 47 (of 48?) double-page engraved plates and maps, 3 also folding. Numerous engraved illustrations. (Lacking plate list at end, frontispiece repaired at margin, a few other plates unobtrusively repaired, S1, Dd6 and Ff2 holed affecting a few letters, Gg1-2 slightly stained, Qq5 torn and repaired with loss to 6 lines of text recto and illustration on verso, later leaves with marginal waterstains.) FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. There were several issues of this work, and copies differ in their make up. This copy is without the two illustrations on pp. 205, 213. The title conforms with Sabin's second issue, but lacks the map of Southern Virginia and Florida. The title, catalogue of the authors and contents are on 4 leaves. Uniformly-bound in early 19th-century polished calf gilt with the Botfield arms, spines panelled in gilt, morocco lettering-pieces, speckled edges. Provenance: '7 vols. -- plates by Hollar -- £12-12-0' (pencil note on front free endpaper of the first work).
A FULL SET OF THE AMPLY-ILLUSTRATED GEOGRAPHICAL AND TOPOGRAPHICAL WORKS ISSUED BY OGILBY who acquired a printing-press after short careers as a dancer, actor and producer; he was also a poet and the translator of Virgil and Aesop. Ogilby has been called 'the English De Bry.' Most of these works are translations or adaptations from Dutch editions and make use of the same plates to form a comprehensive visual and textual survey of three barely-known continents; sold as a collection of works not subject to return.
