Lot Essay

The harp, which was a favourite instrument at the courts of the Mangebetu chiefs, was probably introduced from the south. Those with carved heads similar to the presnt example were carved between 1900 and 1914, see Schildkrout, E., & Keim, C.A., African Reflections. Art from Northeastern Zaïre, Seattle, 1984, p.198 and a harp collected by Lang in Niangara in 1910 p.18, no.1.5
