Lot Essay

This bust is derived from a Graeco-Roman white marble figure known as the Antinous, discovered at the Villa Adriana at Tivoli. That figure recalls Archaic Greek Kouros figures, particularly in the facial composition (as does the bust in this lot), and the slightly extended left foot. The koroi are themselves directly related to Egyptian tomb sculpture.
