A RARE SILVER AND TORTOISESHELL PAIR CASED VERGE POCKET WATCH WITH SUN AND MOON DIAL

gilt fusee movement with divided tulip pillars, pierced and engraved foliate balance cock with irregular foot, balance spring pinned from underneath the backplate, silver champleve dial with Roman hour sector, outer Arabic minutes, sun and moon aperture, engraved beneath with a figure of time pulling a shell charriot, later hand, plain inner case with shuttered winding hole, case maker's initials II, outer case overlaid with tortoiseshell and with silver pique decoration, diameter 51mm.

Lot Essay

Watches with sun and moon dials are quite unusual, the sun is depicted in one half and the moon in the other half of a disc rotating once every 24-hours. The sun and moon act as the hour pointers during the period of rotation.
