8° (204 x 127mm). Contemporary red straight-grained morocco gilt, emblematic tools and the initials G P on covers, green morocco lettering-piece, other spine compartments tooled à la grotesque with a small roll, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Provenance: Col. W.E. Moss (his sale, Sotheby's, 5 March, lot 783) -- Major J.R. Abbey (his sale, Sotheby's, part 3, 19 June 1967, lot 1889) -- [Sotheby's sale, 14 June 1990, lot 3397].

FINE BINDING BY HANWAY'S SECOND BINDER on a work foreshadowing the 'get-tough' policies adopted towards prisoners early in the next century. The 'G P' on the binding probably is George, Prince of Wales, subsequently George IV. Foot/Davis Gift no. 176; G.D. Hobson, English Bindings no. 90 (this copy), no.
