Collation: \\k8 a-q8 r10 (\\k1r title, verso blank, \\k2r author's apologia, \\k2v bull of Pope Innocent III, Summis desiderantibus affectibus, \\k3v approbation of Cologne theological faculty, \\k5v tale, \\k8 blank, a1r text, r9r colophon, r9v-10 blank). 146 leaves. 45 lines and headline, double column. Types: 14:130G (title, headlines), 15:91G (headings), 21:74G (text). 2- to 7-line initial spaces, some with printed guide-letter. (Small marginal wormtrack in first quire, few short marginal tears, small stain in 2 lvs., repaired marginal tear in g1.) 19th-century half brown morocco (slight wear at corners). Provenance: a few early marginal annotations -- Arthur de la Borderie (flyleaf inscription dated 1879).

Fourth edition of the first encyclopedia of witchcraft and demonology. It was compiled by Dominican papal inquisitors Institoris and Sprenger for Germany in response to a bull against heresy promulgated by Pope Innocent VIII, which sanctioned interrogations and punishment of suspected witches. Their handbook outlines all practices of witches' sabbaths, intercourse with the devil, casting spells, etc., and details procedures for inquisitors to follow in conducting witchcraft investigations and trials.
