ORTELIUS, Abraham (1527-1598). Ausszug auss des abrahami Ortely Theatro Orbis Teutsch beschriben durch Levinum Hulsium. Frankfurt, J Keerbergen and L. Hulsius: 1604.
Oblong 32° (120 x 800mm). Engraved title, verso with engraved arms of Joachim Ernst, Maragraffen of Brandeburg, 128 engraved maps, the map of the world double-page and folding, two engraved illustrations. (Some light spotting and marginal soiling, corners of A3 and 4 neatly restored, a few small holes to front free endpaper and paste down, clean tear to fold of world map.) Contemporary vellum, covers panelled in blind with central arms initialled D.B. on upper cover and large fleur de lys on lower cover, blue edges, (lightly soiled, lacking ties). Provenance: Constantinus Josephus de Gatterburg (18th century inscription on front pastedown and various marginal annotations).
THE RARE GERMAN EDITION OF ORTELIUS'S EPITOME. Koeman listed just three copies of this the only German edition of this pocket atlas. Only one copy is listed in English auctions in the last 25 years. Most of the maps are the same as those published in Antwerp in 1602 by Michel Coignet. Koeman III Ort. 66; Phillips Atlases 420.
