CHINESE TOMB MAPS [Xiling - Map of the Western Mausoleum, c.1900.]

A hand-painted wall map of the view of the Xiling or Western Mausoleum, on paper in ink and wash on 10 sheets, joined and subsequently divided into 4 vertical panels, with numerous printed labels naming various tombs and houses. Overall size: 3740 x 1850 mm, each panel mounted on battens and rollers (several neat repairs to upper margins of two panels).

A very attractive late 19th or early 20th century manuscript map showing the arrangement of the famous Qing tombs at Xiling in the Province of Hebei, in the mountains 120 miles North East of Beijing. This imperial mausoleum was established as a royal graveyard in 1730 during the reign of Emperor Youngzheng. This is now China's largest dynastic cemetery with over 140 members of the royal family and court buried here. This map shows the landscape of the whole area, including the distant Yongning Mountain, the Wudao River, the local road system, and the royal tombs and temples. The mausoleums are marked in red and several Manchurian military camps are plotted. An interesting example of a Chinese tomb map.
