Lot Essay

Ordered for Edward Knight Collins's Dramatic line, Roscius was named for the Roman comic actor of antiquity. Her design owed much to cotton droughers that had nearly flat floors, thereby increasing her tonnage. As a result, Roscius was the first packet to exceed 1,000 tons capacity. She was acquired by Spofford Tileston and Company in 1848 and sold four years later. After service between New York and Mobile for the Pelican Line, Roscius returned to the transatlantic trade, foundering at sea on August 26, 1860, en route from Liverpool to New York.
