A PAIR OF HUANGHUALI SIDE CHAIRS, KAOBEIYI
17th century
Each with a humped toprail supported on slightly bent backposts continuing to the back legs, the splat divided into four sections, the uppermost panel with a beaded circular opening, the central panel plain to show off its lovely graining, the third with a beaded, lozenge-shaped aperture, and the bottom with an intricately worked beaded spandrel, both sides of the entire splat set with delicately carved flanges, the hard mat seat enclosed by a rectangular frame with 'ice plate' edge above legs joined in front and the sides by arch-shaped beaded aprons and shaped spandrels, a rectangular stretcher with shaped aprons underneath joining the legs above the feet
