1970 MERCEDES-BENZ 280 SL ROADSTER WITH HARD TOP
Registration No. Not UK Registered
Chassis No. 113.044/12/01 4667
Engine No. 139.989/12/00 9485
Kingfisher blue with blue interior
Engine: Six cylinder, single overhead camshaft, 2,778cc, 170bhp at 5,700 rpm; Gearbox: automatic transmission; Brakes: four-wheel disc; Suspension: independent all round with coil springs, single joint swing angle at rear. Left hand drive.
The Mercedes 280SL is a truly exceptional example of Daimler-Benz quality and styling which makes it one of the most sought after classics of today. Considered by many to be the most practical sports car of its generation, it offers the excitement of a sports cabriolet which more than holds its own in today's driving conditions. After the success of the 230SL and the 250SL models, Mercedes went on to produce the definitive 280SL which retained the elegant body shape with the addition of the more powerful 2,778cc injection engine.
With its speedometer in miles per hour, and left hand drive configuration this 280 SL must have originally been supplied to an American market customer. History from that period is not known, until the late 1980s when it was sold to the present owner.
Today, the car is tidily presented, but not concours. At some stage in its life the car has received some refurbishment, as it has been repainted, but the interior upholstery is the original which has been connollised, the carpets have been renewed. Cosmetically, it therefore presents quite well, but we did feel that the engine bay was a little scruffy.
In the current ownership, the car has been displayed and as such not used, it will therefore require recommissioning to return it to the road.
