Lot Essay

Pryde's painting was inspired by François Didier de Nome's 'Ruins with Saint Augustine and the Child', painted in 1623. The National Gallery acquired the painting by De Nome, also known as Monsu Desiderio, in 1926 and it was here that it was most probably seen by Pryde. It has been suggested that this painting may be a representation of Macbeth and the Witches.
