Inlaid in aogai and decorated in gold and iroe hiramaki-e and takamaki-e, the top with an oval panel depicting a battle scene inscribed below 'Zeeslag tusschen de Bataafsche en Engelsche Vlooten op de hoogte van Egmond, den Eled: October 1797' (Naval battle between the Batavian and English fleets near Egmond, the Eled: October 1797), surrounded overall with ho-o birds and scattered flowers, one side set with a drawer, opening to an interior fitted with two hinged plaques forming the writing slope below four compartments at the top, damaged

Lot Essay

This type of export lacquer that was made in large quantities during the 19th Century, is known as Nagasaki ware. The shapes are usually after a European prototype and the lacquer inlaid with paper-thin mother-of-pearl backed with colours.
