Chart inscribed in oval border 'Plan de la Baye de Frederick Hendrick Terre de Diemen Levé par le Lieutenant de Vau. Hry. Freycinet Voyage du Capitaine N Baudin an 10me. de la Repque Francese. [1801-2], manuscript on paper (watermark: D. & C. BLAUW), by Baudin, based on Henri de Freycinet's survey, ink and watercolour, grid in pencil, compass and scale (unfinished) in ink with ink border, with the track of the survey marked also detailed soundings, Frederick Henry Bay, Tasmania, February 1802, 24 3/8 x 28 1/8cm. (62 x 71.5cm.), some creasing along centre fold, upper border worn and one tear not affecting chart.

ONE OF THE FIRST FULL CHARTS OF FREDERICK HENRY BAY, BY BAUDIN including thirteen place names inscribed in pen. This detailed map of the Bay (between Hobart and the Tasman Peninsula) is based on surveys made by Henri de Freycinet. The bay had previously been visited by Tasman, Marion du Fresne and others, but this is one of the earliest detailed charts.

This chart is annotated on the verso in a nineteenth-century hand 'No.4'. It is in the same hand as Lot 10.

Lot Essay

'26 February (7 Ventose). At 5.a.m Henri Freycinet returned for his examination of Marion Bay; and at 11.30a.m. Faure returned from his survey of the Schartens ... with the return of the two surveying parties, Baudin's work in the region was finished and he gave orders for the ships to be got ready to sail next morning.

Henri Freycinet's survey of Marion bay began at Pebbly Point and extended as far south as Cape Frederick Hendrik. Blackman Bay (Tasman's Frederick Hendricx Bay) was examined thoroughly, the whole of its Shore being traversed on foot and a detailed map of it prepared. Freycinet was accompanied on this expedition by Bernier, Depuch, Baudin (midshipman) and Martin (quartermaster) ...' (Plomley op.cit., p.78).
