Tibet, late 16th/early 17th Century
Seated on a cushion incised with foliate and lattice patterns, holding a book with his hands in the gesture of explication, wearing underrobes with incised flowerheads and a peaked headdress molded with cloudscrolls, visvavajra, sun and moon and a flowerhead terminal, incised on reverse 'Homage to the Regent Dragpa Dondrup (made in the likeness of),' base sealed

Lot Essay

The inscription denotes that this image was made during Gyaltsab Dragpa Dondup's lifetime to represent his actual portrait. Gyaltsab Dragpa Dondup (1550-1617) is the fourth incarnate lama in the Gyaltsab lineage of Karma Kagyu and was a student of Karmapa Wangchug Dorje (1550-1603) and the Seventh Shamar Tulku Knochog Yanlag (1525-1583).
