The graceful figure shown casually seated leaning on a small armrest with monster-mask cabriole leg while holding a scroll, wearing a lotus necklace and gracefully draped robes, the face well carved with inward-looking expression, and the hair dressed in knotted tresses falling over the shoulders

Lot Essay

Compare a boxwood figure of Damo shown in a similar pose, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 1 May 1994, lot 522.
This figure is very likely based on dehua porcelain prototypes such as the example illustrated by P.J. Donnelly, Blanc de Chine, New York, 1969, pl. 147A and another pl. 154C.
