Lot Essay

This lot forms part of a fascinating series in which Picasso reversed the normal artistic practice of working forward from an outline to the finished compostion. Here, over 11 stages, Picasso reduced a fully worked up drawing to its most simple element - a single outline. The present composition is stage five in this process - the bull is still recognisable, but the underlying geometry is becoming apparent.
