Lot Essay

Marie-Thérèse Walter and Dora Maar were very different characters, and the way in which Picasso portrayed them reflected this. Whereas Marie-Thérèse was depicted in various guises as an actress in complex narrative scenes, portraits of Dora Maar were just that - portraits. Perhaps he felt her character was too strong or too well-formed for him to imagine her being anyone other than who she was.
