ADMIRAL BOSCAWEN DEFEATS THE FRENCH OFF CAPE LAGOS, 19 AUGUST 1759
Boscawen at Gibraltar for a refit organises his only frigates ready to keep a look out for the French. On the 17th they are sighted: fourteen sail on the Barbary shore to the eastward of Ceuta... I got under sail as fast as possible and was out of the bay before ten with fourteen sail of the line the Shannon and Aetna fireship. At daylight the chase began engaging at two thirty and with the flagship at 4 pm. The Namur's mizzen mast and both top-sail yards were shot away: I shifted my flag to the Newark and soon after the Centaur of 74 guns struck. I pursued all night and in the morning of the 19th saw one four sail standing in for the land. The French Admiral M de la Clue having one leg broke and the other wounded landed, his flagship grounded and set on fire. Vice Admiral Brodrick with his Division burnt the Redoubtable. Three French ships of the line were captured. A single sheet on one side only totalling 42cm. of column space in a complete issue of The London Gazette (EXTRAORDINARY) dated Friday, 7 September 1759.
