Lot Essay

Pryde was born in Edinburgh and studied at the Royal Institute and in Paris. He met the artist William Nicholson at Herkomer's School and together, under the name 'Beggarstaff Brothers', produced highly original posters. His canvases have a theatrical quality, with buildings exaggerated in scale and cavenous interiors, deep in shadow.
