Lot Essay

This extremely rare print's title is for the French novelist, Louis-Ferdinand Céline whose writings convey cynical attitudes and an attention to death -- qualitites that Johns regularly explored in his artwork himself. A painting by the same title during the same year comprises a series of handprints and crosshatches.
