Helmet Bowl Signed Masanobu, Edo Period (Early-Mid 17th Century), Armour Edo Period (Early-Mid 19th Century)
The elegant twenty-eight plate sujibachi [ridged bowl] black-lacquered, signed Neo Masanobu saku [made by Neo Masanobu], extensively mounted with copper-gilt fukurin [metal edging] to all the suji with igaki [small plates at the base] and an elaborate kuwagata-dai and kuwagata [horn-stand and horns] in the centre of which is a gilded wood shishi-maedate [lion-shaped forecrest], the mabisashi and fukigaeshi [peak and turnbacks] covered with printed doeskin, the latter with the hollyhock mon [crest], the five-lame shikoro [neck guard] of hon-kozane [true lamellae], the russet-iron menpo [mask] with silvered teeth and a moustache indicated in silver lacquer; the kote [sleeves] of Nanban-gusari [European-style mail], the forearm protected by a gold-lacquered hyotan [gourd-shaped plate] and the upper arm with circular plates overlaid with gilt metal kiku [chrysanthemums], the o-sode [large shoulder-guards] of hon-kozane [true lamellae]; the do [cuirass] also of hon-kozane with matching kusazuri [tassets] mounted with gilt copper kanamono [decorative mounts]; the haidate [thigh- guards] of Nanban-gusari inset with gilt kiku matching the kote, with Shino suneate [shin guards], a pair of fur boots and a saihai [a paper-tasselled baton], contained in a fine gusoku-bitsu [armour chest]
