Lot Essay

Churchill spent the Christmas of 1935 in Tangier and then travelled to Marrakech which would remain a favourite place to visit and paint in later years. The present work demonstrates the inspiration that Churchill had derived from the colourful Morroccan landscape that he had been painting over the winter. In Painting as a Pastime (London, 1948, p. 60) Churchill wrote, 'I must say I like bright colours. I agree with Ruskin in his denunciation of that school of painting who 'eat slate-pencil and chalk, and assure everybody that they are nicer and purer than strawberries and plums.' I cannot pretend to feel impartial about the colours. I rejoice with the brilliant ones, and am genuinely sorry for the poor browns'.
