A rare Merrythought 'Punkinhead' teddy bear
with brown mohair, replaced clear and black glass eyes, inset velvet muzzle, black stitched nose and mouth, golden mohair inner ear and chest, long white mohair scalp, swivel head, jointed limbs with velvet feet and brown felt pads, original yellow shorts and yellow rectangular label on left foot --12½in. (32cm.) high, circa 1951 (right foot and eyes replaced, general wear and repairs to pads)

Lot Essay

Punkinhead was made exclusively as the mascot for Eaton's department store in Toronto, Canada. He became the hero of several storybooks, as well as the leader of the annual Santa Claus parade.
