2o (314 x 205 mm). Title-page printed in red and black. (Title rubbed and soiled and with clear tape repair to upper margin, some light browning and foxing throughout.) Contemporary blind-ruled calf (rebacked).
FIRST EDITION. The first official production of the Royal Society. Evelyn wrote in protest against the widespread destruction of forests for the fuelling of furnaces used in the production of iron and glass. The work was well-received and resulted in an increase in reforestation. Sylva was long a standard authority. Contemporary red straight-grained morocco gilt, top edge gilt (some dampstaining and soiling, endpapers renewed). Provenance: Walter J.H. Jones (armorial bookplate). Second edition of Dr Alexander Hunter's edition of the sylva, this copy with the Terra included, and with the plates hand-colored on thick paper. Keynes 48 (noting two copies hand-colored). (2)
